Rimegepant has been approved by the National Health Service (England) for migraine use.  The drug regulatory body National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) recommended the drug for treating 145,000 persons who have experienced at least three failed attempts at preventing migraines.

According to experts, Rimegepant is the first migraine medication suggested by Nice that is used orally, and for many thousands of individuals, it is likely to be a welcome and more practical addition to the current treatment options for a condition that is frequently ignored and undertreated.

Rimegepant works by preventing the release of a protein called calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in the brain responsible for the extreme inflammation and excruciating pain linked to migraine attacks. Drugs used to treat other disorders, such as beta-blockers, antidepressants, and epilepsy treatments, are among the treatment possibilities for preventing migraines.

Other alternatives suggested by Nice include Erenumab, fremanezumab, or galcanezumab . Charities expressed their delight at introducing a new migraine therapy but were unsatisfied as the drug was not approved for acute instances.

Senior officials claimed that many migraine sufferers have a headache from medication misuse as a result of their treatment, which negatively influences their life. If migraines are successfully treated, this impact can be avoided. Gepants, a new class of migraine drugs of which Rimegepant is a member, can assist in avoiding this.
